Hello! Complete newbie here. I was reading through threads to get advice on writing to inmates & I think I read somewhere that you should not mention in your letter that you found the inmate through an online profile & that if you do your letter will not make it through the screening system to get delivered to the inmate. Of course now I can?t find the thread... So my question - is this true? If so, I may end up having to write an introductory letter all over again. ☹️

Hi Never mension about an inmate been online , It does cause a lot of trouble for the inmate some cases a write up, i know this from personal experince,Inmates with tablets cant print photos off , You will have too post them via Snail mail,Georgia have just set something up that only ppl with visitors premits are allowed to mail them on jpay, Also allow time for the jpay message to go through it isnt the fastest thing in world and does go down pretty often,Does it really matter were you found them anyways,

Hi Tabbycat. Love the name. I have a tabby cat. I noticed you mentioned Michigan. I have been trying to find out for some time now. Do you know if an inmate who has a jaypay tablet can print pictures you send them off  their tablet in the facility?  Please help me. My pen pal. Said the exact same to me when I wrote him. That I was the first one to write. I really appreciate any and all help. Have a blessed day.

Oh no, I wish I had read this a few hours ago, I posted a letter to a prisoner in Tallahassee this morning and mentioned where I had seen their profile, the inmate must be aware of the rules so I wonder why they didn’t state this in their profile, the thing is if it does get through but this person decides not to write back, I’m never going to know if that’s what happened or if the warden threw it in the bin.

I haven't really written people much in the states that "don't allow penpals", but I have otherwise and I always mention it and it's never prevented my stuff from getting through. But again, this is from the experience of writing states that allow penpals. I think it's Oklahoma, Florida and Indiana (???) that don't allow penpals, I know/or thought anyway that it's more than the two Kirsten mentioned but I don't know the others...anyway, I have zero experience in those states. It's kind of stupid that there are states that don't, every state should allow them. You don't have to be a family member or close friend to be a useful source of support for inmates, WAP forum is full of people who prove this.

Oklahoma and Florida don't allow it, so I would not mention it there.

Michigan is obviously ok with it. I Jpay'd D and mentioned where I found him and he wrote back saying I am the first person to write to him from here, so it was good to know his profile was up. :-)

I'll see if I can find a list of states and their status on this...?

Some states allow inmates to have a penpal profile, other states don't and I'm not sure which states allow what. Maybe it is best not to mention until they bring it up themselves
