Is a prisoner's photo hasn't been verified by WriteAPrisoner then what are the chances of it being fake? I don't want to assume that one is fake if it could actually just not have been verified. Where/how do the prisoner's get their photos if they are fake? Surely their profiles are monitored within the facility to avoid this? Any information would be gratefully received.

I contacted my first penpal through pen and paper and it took a month to get a reply back. Second penpal I contacted through jpay and it took me 2 weeks to get a reply back (he is in Texas and can only reply via snail mail). So it's up to you what way to proceed. Jpay is easy to use, you register and add money to your account for stamps. Add your penpal and you are good to go. If your penpal is in Texas or Colorado add your address in the body of your jpay so they could reply via snail mail.

Funny you should suggest that because I've just been on Google and verified that it is the same person. Thank you :)

On a separate note, can I ask how people usually contact the inmates? Do people use pen and paper? I've seen jpay mentioned but don't know anything about it.

All my penpals have unverified photos but I was able to very them by looking them up online and found Facebook pics and mugshots. So I know it's them. Actually it's a great idea to look someone up before writing to them just in case you uncover something you are not comfortable with. Better find out before and not get involved than getting involved and finding out later.

Thank you for your response. I'm new to all this and noticed on one profile that the photo isn't verified but has the WAP stamp along the bottom. Not sure if it is a genuine photo or not but I guess it doesn't really matter.

Hey Jenna, I wouldn’t put too much weight on the “not verified” thing. If there’s a mug shot out there in internet land, or a booking photo for a particular Department of Corrections, those are the easiest for WAP to verify. If it’s a photo from somewhere else without a law enforcement component, not so much.
