I'm a bit confused about how a pen pal can respond. If I use the email forwarding option, they can respond via their email provider (such as Securus) or any other communication channel, or they can ONLY respond via snail mail?
Hello,
Thank you. The email forward option is a courtesy to WriteAPrisoner, a way to start correspondence with a pen pal. It's for initial contact only.
After that, you have to find and pay your way to stay in contact with your pen pal. That can be snail mail or institutional email (if available).
Institutional emails are the likes of JPay, CorrLinks, Securus, etc. The State will have a contract with one of these and that is the one available, if they have any. In the inmate profiles, you can see, which one is used. Be aware, that some "emails" only work one way: you to them (e.g. JPay/Texas). Meaning your pen pal has to write a letter and send it to you.
Have a nice day!

Thank you! So, just to clarify, if they have an institutional email, they can send a response to my initial contact email on Gmail (or receive a link from the provider on Gmail indicating that I have received an email from my pen pal) ?
