I’m new and have just a few general questions about JPay :).  I’ve written 2 inmates recently and I assume they can write me back via email (dependent upon if they have access to a kiosk). Is this correct? I did not include my home address in the body of the email as I’d prefer to keep correspondence strictly online. I know Texas requires them to respond via snail mail. Is anyone sure about Idaho or Washington regarding access to kiosks.

Anyone have any idea how long it typically takes for a prisoner to receive mail via JPay in their experience?

Also, can prisoners view my profile on JPay at the kiosk with my address and phone number?

Thanks in advance for yall’s help!

Jpay is highly time variable. Responses can pop up in as little as 30minutes to 2hours but may take a day to several days depending on how busy the mailroom is. Jpay are the middleman, they just forward on your mail. Contingent on whether they have access to a kiosk or whether in some states (such as California) where they have a reader (a heavily secured Android tablet) they may read and reply to you as quickly or as slowly as that. In states such as Texas they will respond by written correspondence after receiving a print out.

Idaho and Washingon State specific comments are best directed towards those forums however for now:

  • Idaho is a “full service” state meaning that they can use jpay for ingoing and outbound emails, videogram, video visits, and access to the jpay music catalogue and you can do everything except send money.
  • Washington is the same as above except you can send money.

These are two of the better states to write people in using jpay.

Thank you so much for your response! That makes complete sense. Any idea as far as access to a kiosk in Michigan or Ohio?

You can find the answer pretty quickly by typing it into Google. Michigan is fairly limited to just plain email.

Where as Ohio is not.

I’m fairly certain I made a rookie error. I emailed 2 prisoners through JPay that are in the same facility. Will this get either one of them in trouble or cancel the emails?

No... Just explain what you did to the one you like the least and don't make a habit of it...

I’m sorry to be a pain but I just had one last question, I think lol. I received my first response from a PP and I wrote him back; is there a way to know how often prisoners are allowed to use a kiosk or if they have a tablet how often they can use? Is it common to receive multiple responses in a day? He’s in a max security prison in Idaho but he wrote me back fairly quickly.

There's no way of knowing until you get into the flow of things... jpay nor any of the other inmate email services do not send out read notifications... It depends how active they are on it... I get three and sometimes four messages a day from the person I write to... its just like texting really. Once its all set up and you have the app on your phone you can go right about messaging them any time they write you back. Jpay can get prohibitively expensive like that though... I mean you have to buy stamps... Writing a federal inmate by Corrlinks is at least free (for me at least) they pay about .08c a minute.
