Hi Everyone!

I had never seen anything like WriteAPrisoner.com. I really found this amazing! It's really human, kind and I believe it must bring comfort to these guys who are paying for their mistakes.

I really would like to start writing, but I have to many doubts.

1st - I'm Brazilian and I'm still studying english. My english is definitely bad to write =(  although I can read and understand easily. Can this be a problem?

2st - Could I use a virtual mailbox in the United States? Something like clevvermail? Would it make contact easier?

3st - I'm a gay man, are there problems with writing for straight men? My purpose is just to be a friend, to listen, to advise! I never want to disrespect the human being on the other side of the letter.

4st - Could you give me tips? I have no idea how to start!

Thanks a lot guys!

1) Your English looks okay to me.  It's a little choppy, which is understandable since it's not your first language.  I think this will not be a huge problem for you when writing inmates.

2) I'm not sure how a virtual mailbox would work, but most of the people here are from outside the United States and just use their own foreign home address or a PO Box service in their home country.

3) Your sexuality probably won't matter as much as being male.  Read the profiles and it should say what gender they're interested in writing.  I suscribe to the theory that men in prison are around men all the time and don't need a new one from outside.  So as a man I only write women.

4) Don't write gay men in Kentucky.  There's a big popular scam in the Kentucky system where men pretend to be gay to attract gay men and straight women to send them money.

Also don't try to hide who you are by giving a fake address or name.  That's just dishonest and you should not try to start an interpersonal relationship on lies.

Include your return address and the inmate's address (including prisoner number) on the first page of each letter.  Some prisons throw away the envelope before giving to the inmate and he needs to know how to write you back.

Profiles stay up for a year, so the longer it's been since the last renewal, the less likely it is that the inmate will respond.  That is because they are more likely to have pen pals already.  Don't let that stop you from trying to write them, just know the odds.

Besides that, just find an inmate you like and start writing.  Don't get hung up on the fact that he is in prison.  Just act like you're writing a normal person living in a really shitty hotel out in a foreign land.

Your English is defintely better than you would get from, say, translating your native tongue through Google translate.  Since you're Brazilian, I am going to run my original post through Google Translate to have it translate to Portuguese.  You can decide how much sense it makes.

Hi there, you mentioned 'virtual' mailbox, you can actually get one on jmail.cc in California, I'm using it myself since I'm from overseas. JPay is fast and convenient, but they don't have it in every state.

I wrote to someone who appears to be gay in Kentucky. His profile-text seemed quite honest to me, however I am aware even that can be decieving. I am bisexual, however I didn't mention that yet. It's also not my intention to hook up with a prisoner on the other side of the world. I mentioned my occupation, my hobbies and interests, the things I recognised in his story and I wished him lots of strength and he can write me back about anything he wants.

How long can it last before I get a reply? What are the things I have to be alert on?

Zardoz, really the only thing to be on the lookout for is requests for money.  There's not a lot an inmate conning a free person can do.  So if you keep your wallet closed, there's not much to fear.
