I was under the impression this was totally free but not sure? I’m from the uk and have sent an inmate an email but do I need to make a payment to send it off or get a response back?
No, it’s completely free. But don’t forget the next time you cannot send an email again to the same pp. You have to use snailmail or others.

So once I’ve sent the initial email it’s then carried on through the mailing system? So I’m to write it out then stamp it and send through the post?? I’m from the uk

Just a little confused on how this works. So do they send me a letter through post? And I reply through post back with a hand written letter and stamped?

Indeed!
So after you have sent the e-mail to establish initial contact, the inmate will - if he or she wishes to - respond by sending you a letter by post. And then you reply to him or her by means of a handwritten letter in a stamped envelope send through the mail
