Have you checked if whether his institution has email? Most inmates do not have access to the internet so they can only respond via snail mail. Some prisons do allow inmates to both send and receive emails, but that depends. Alternatively you can get a PO Box or there’s a service called Jmail that some people use on here that works similar to this site, where they will print and send your letters and then and scan and email/send you the response letters (at least that’s how I think it works?). It cost money though! Good luck and all the best with your writing!
You will need to write to someone that has institutional email such a Corrlinks, GTL, jpay, or Access Corrections and you wont be able to write to a state such as Texas where inmates can only reply by regular mail.
Hey so I have found a super cute looking guy that I want to pen pal with, but email is down right now and I can't send a letter because I live in England so how long until we can email again? :)
Why can't you send a letter just because you live in England? I live in Germany and sending letters has never been a problem.
I'm going through the same at the moment. I live in Brazil and my pen-pal is in California. Due to the Covid Pandemia, mails are CLOSED!
I just downloaded Jpay. All you have to do is find the inmate you'd like to email, (as long as they use Jpay) and buy stamps which are very cheap, and there ya go
For those of you who have used JPay, is it worth it? What's your experience been like? I am thinking about writing someone that way but don't want to do it if it doesn't work or takes them as long to be able to reply as it would via regular mail.
@ma 00 .. I have a pp in california and have problem with either snail mail (altho' right now is taking forever because going via sea as insufficient planes flying) and JPay is working just fine now too, so not sure why you believe all mail is closed?
@Ryhughes3 I will admit for a brief while I got frustrated when mails were taking a while to get to and fro, but I was new to the game. Now a better rhythm has been established with my pp, I think it's great. Ok, so a couple of mails took a few days to land and were out of sequence with others sent, but still way better than waiting weeks for a snail mail to arrive.. in either direction. I would recommend you go with it.
@ma 00 .. sorry should have double checked before posting....should of course read * and have no problem......
I sent a letter via e-mail How long does it take to get the letter via post?
Stephaniemelis: "email"--you mean JPay? WAP letter-forwarding service? Inmates don't have "internet based email" so I'm not sure what you mean.
How long postal service takes for a letter between you and your pen pal depends on where you and the pen pal are located in the world. Check your local post office for info.
How long postal mail takes to be received or sent out from a prison is also prison-specific, based on the policies and the staff working the mail room there. I just heard from someone who told me one of his fellow inmates received a birthday card in March for his birthday in February. But it was sent for his birthday last year, in 2020, so it was a year and a couple of weeks late.
