Has anyone heard of this? There is a bill out in certain states to stop employer's from being able to ask for your Facebook password. They are seeking passwords so that they can get indepth information about you before they offer employment. I am appalled by this and would never consider working for an employer that would go this far into someone's privacy. I can't believe that we have to have laws to stop this type of invasion of privacy rather than just not allowing it in the first place. I'm hot about this one! LOL

Wow! I had never heard about that. It's crazy! I completely agree; if an employer had asked me for my password I'd say goodbye and walked out. But with the Privacy laws we have in Norway it will never be something I have to worry about. Unless I am moving to the US, that is.

Sorry, no one has any right to ask me for the password to any of my online accounts as far as I'm concerned. I would dump a boyfriend who expected to be given access to my private accounts, so why would I allow an employer into a private world that is none of his business?
My Facebook already has every privacy option offered, plus I am somewhat careful about what I post there in the first place, as I do have younger relatives and the children of friends on my Facebook friends list.

Yeah, I heard about this. And if a potential employer asked for my Facebook password I'd give it to them. After they gave me theirs. :)

It is common knowledge here as it's been in the news that potential employers have often checked people out through face book, not all have privacy filters. I know my daughters friends with her boss on face book and sometimes i cringe at the things posted, but while i remind her of the fact, she's like "mum, they know me, i see there's too"......LOL

And here is the guy who kicked it off in Maryland. A correctional officer who didn't like this new ask:

Poll: Should Employers Access Your Facebook Page? - Arbutus, MD Patch

*good job refraining from anti-fb rant, gooddog!*

I don't use f/book but I still think its wrong to ask for a password,I think our wise ambassador (with probe - not liking the sound of that by the way ) would have all the knowledge on everyone she wanted .....there is no escape people just way way to wise

I listen to the radio a lot and there's a lot of articles on NPR (National Public Radio) on prisons and technology n' stuff.

I don't use facebook. I don't really understand what purpose it serves.
Recently I got to the third interview stage of a job application (music librarian) that I was more than qualified for. The interview was instantly terminated when I said I don't have facebook. I think that was WRONG.

Silas.. very interesting and scary at the same time that this is impacting ppl.. thanks for posting and for the info.. I had a fb once but found it useless, I figured if ppl want to stay in touch with me they know my info vs emailing on fb ironically a lot of them have fallen out of contact but the close ones are still in touch so guess it was a good way to clean house..

I'm trying to imagine what I'd say if a potential employer asked for my FB password. I think I'd be gobsmacked and the first words out of my mouth (unfiltered of course) would be "Are you effing kidding me?!?"

But now that I know that there is the potential for such a question - I'd just tell them, I don't think that that has any bearing on my qualifications for this job" and leave it at that. WOW! That's some crazy shiz right there.

For this reason I am glad I work for myself.

My husband's work tried to use personal information, that was non-work related against him. It was an awful mess relating to 7 of his superiors no longer working for his company.

I have no problem with anyone seeing my Facebook account as I have it portrayed to the general public. Asking for your Facebook password is simply invasion of privacy. I'm not sure many would invite their boss to observe their behavior or what they do on their time off.

I wonder how some employers would feel if they knew their employees were writing to inmates?

Totally agree with this, and with you about what to say if asked, I am afraid it might not come out nice or eloquent :censored: .. If they are that type of employer I don't want to work for them anyway, plus I don't even have a fb deleted it over a year ago but no one has the right to your password hence it's a password.. If you post something publicly then you know it can be viewed but it still should have no bearing.. Qualifications and work performance should get you and keep you a position and nothing else...it's a crazy world, and things are getting worse.

Here its classed as stalking if an employer looks at your facebook. I was fed up with a guy not being at work and making excuses as to why he wasnt in. you could see they were all lies, one time he said he had been beat up, he didnt come in for a week, which meant he had to be covered AGAIN. I looked at his facebook on the morning he txted me to say he wasnt coming in and what had supposedly happened, he had been putting his status on facebook as having a hangover after a night out. we couldnt do anything about it then, but i got rid of him a week later.. and gave the job to someone that actually wanted a job and would come in..

Mine already does, I made a point of mentioning it at the interview.
