This is my first time wanting to write a prisoner. I've heard people talk about how they've been pen- pals to a couple prisoners at a time... What questions are we allowed to ask and what can we not ask? Also once we get to know them are we allowed to give them our numbers just so they have someone to call when they get phone time? I know this isn't a dating site and im not using this for that at all!!! I just wanna be a friend to someone that needs it!

Annamarie! Good for you! I hope you find this as rewarding as damn near most of us do!

My own approach is conversational – like we’re together somewhere, hanging out, and just having a chat. Of course, that somewhere is on a sheet of paper, and it might take a few letters back and forth to get the conversation rolling.

In the meantime, I’d think good questions would pick up on things you’re genuinely curious about. Maybe it’s something from their profile that grabbed your attention (something had to, right?) and you want to hear more about. Maybe you’re wondering what their day is like. Or things they’re interested in, or passionate about. Just be yourself. And don’t hesitate to volunteer your answers to the same questions you ask. It sets up a good dynamic.

I always avoid discussing whatever actions landed someone in prison unless they bring it up first and open that door. Gang-related topics are also no-go. Instead, I kind of see this as an antidote to prison, to all the bad things in life, and use it to focus on what’s good – to spread some sunshine around. I can tell you that sunshine is universally and desperately needed, and genuinely appreciated… but get ready. When it comes back to you tenfold, you’ll know.

And yes! Phone time is awesome!

Best wishes, and happy writing!
