U.S. Sentencing Commission

The U.S. Sentencing Commission is an independent agency in the judicial branch that establishes sentencing policies and practices for the federal courts, including detailed guidelines describing the appropriate form and severity of punishment for offenders convicted of federal crimes. Also evaluates the effects of sentencing guidelines on the criminal justice system, and recommends to Congress modifications of criminal law and sentencing procedures.
